Backup, reset and keys ​

Everything on this page lives in Settings ▸ Data. Open Preferences from the menu bar icon (the strip of small icons along the top right of your screen), then choose Data in the sidebar.

The page has four sections. One of them, backing up, is safe. The other three delete or replace data, and so does importing a backup. There is no undo, so read the section before you use it.

What each action affects ​

Here is exactly what each of the four data actions changes and what it leaves alone. Come back to this table whenever you are unsure.

"Adjustable settings" means things like your languages, theme, shortcuts, proxy, launch at login, translation window layout and history limit. "Services" means your list of translation, dictionary, encyclopedia, speech and text-recognition engines.

Export all settings ​

A backup is a single file that holds your setup, so you can keep a copy or move to another Mac. It contains your settings, your configured services, your keys, your history and favorites, and your statistics.

  1. Open Preferences from the menu bar icon and go to Settings ▸ Data.
  2. Click Export All Settings….
  3. Optionally type a password. A password encrypts the file, so only someone with the password can open it. Leave it blank for a plain, unencrypted file.
  4. Choose where to save it. TransOne writes a .transonebackup file.

TIP

Your keys are inside the backup. If you leave the password blank, the file is not encrypted and anyone who opens it can read your keys. Either set a password, or store the file somewhere only you can reach.

Import settings ​

Importing a backup replaces everything with what is in the file. This includes your current history and favorites, which are overwritten.

  1. Open Preferences from the menu bar icon and go to Settings ▸ Data.
  2. Click Import Settings… and choose your .transonebackup file.
  3. If the file has a password, enter it.
  4. Confirm when TransOne asks. Your current setup is replaced.

WARNING

This overwrites your current history and favorites, not just your settings. If there is anything on this Mac you want to keep, export it first.

Move to a new Mac ​

To carry your whole setup, including your keys, to another Mac:

  1. On the old Mac, export all settings to a .transonebackup file. Set a password, since the file holds your keys.
  2. Move the file to the new Mac (AirDrop, a shared drive, or any way you like).
  3. Install TransOne on the new Mac and open Settings ▸ Data.
  4. Click Import Settings…, choose the file, and enter the password.

Remove all saved keys ​

Remove All Saved Keys… deletes every API key from the macOS Keychain, along with your proxy password. Your list of engines and every other setting stay exactly as they were, so the engines are simply left without their keys.

Use this when you are handing the Mac to someone else but want to keep your setup, or when you want to re-enter your keys from scratch.

Restore services to defaults ​

Restore Services to Defaults… returns all five service categories (translation, text recognition, speech synthesis, dictionary and encyclopedia) to the engines they shipped with, and deletes those services' keys. It also clears your statistics.

Your other settings, and your history and favorites, are left untouched.

Reset all settings ​

Reset All Settings… restores the adjustable settings to their defaults: your languages, theme, shortcuts, proxy, launch at login, translation window layout and history limit.

It does not touch your services, your keys, your history, your favorites or your statistics. Use it when you have changed a lot of options and want a clean slate without losing your engines or your saved translations.

The ECDICT offline dictionary database is large, so it is not included in a backup. After you import a backup on another Mac, download ECDICT again there if you use it.
